VELIKA PLANINA

Distance 5km/20 minutes from the chaletVelika Planina - An extensive alpine plateau in the Kamnik Alps. It is one of the largest areas of pastures in Slovenia. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were over 100 shepherds' huts here. They are among the most picturesque alpine dwellings. Their elliptical, shingled roofs reach almost to the ground. These architectural elements have been imitated by modern tourist architecture. East access to the plateau is provided by a gondola from the Simnovec Inn and a chair-lift to the top.In the Spring, Summer and Autumn, Velika Planina is the ideal place for one-day trips. Organized trips with a guide for smaller and larger groups are available, which includes a tour of the valley of the river “Kamniška Bistrica“ as well as a tour around the mountain pasture with its herd’s settlements and other interesting things. Lunch is also taken care of, which will be prepared in a lodge on the mountain or in one of the lodges in the valley. The 1666 meter high plateau is very suitable for hikers who set out to the mountain by cableway where they can decide to walk to the herd settlements or onward to Mala planina, a marked, circular path. Three footpaths are suitable for longer hikes, which lead from the valley (from the chalet's front door) to the mountain pasture and are marked as mountaineering footpaths. Mountain bikes may by taken by cableway and chairlift where you will find nicely arranged and easy tracks that are suitable for family cycling. In the Winter months the plateau is transformed into a family friendly ski resort with a double-seated chairlift and four ski lifts, one of which is intended for children and those with less skiing knowledge. On the weekends there is a kindergarten, with animators and teachers providing entertainment and a progress in ski knowledge. For many years Velika Planina has successfully operated a ski school for all ages and abilities. There is also a sleighing track that attracts more and more sledding lovers to night sledding. You reach the mountain by cable car and from there several times to the top with the chairlift, to the starting point of the sleighing track.
